History professor Karen Petrone's new book unearths a wealth of buried stories from the Soviet state about the memory of World War I.

Mark Kornbluh, Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, wants A&S students to succeed. One way they can stay on track is to take summer & online courses. The latest UK at the Half segment focused on course offerings for Summer 2012. Carl Nathe, host of UK at the Half, interviewed the Dean for the radio program, which airs during each UK basketball game.

Nathan DeWall is one of three co-directors of A&S Wired, a residential college which will open its doors in August 2011. In this interview, he discusses options for learning opportunities inside and out of A&S Wired.

Patrick Bigger is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Geography at the University of Kentucky. He is a co-founder and member of the Political Ecology Working Group, a multidisciplinary group that organized the first Political Ecology conference in February 2011.

Stephanie Schwabe, a professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, studies underwater cave systems in the Bahamas and is the founder of the Rob Palmer Blue Holes Foundation. She was recently featured on a National Geographic Explorer episode about a dive and a near-death experience. In addition to talking about her research on cave formation, Schwabe discusses the challenges of being female in a male-dominated discipline.

Cristina Alcalde is one of the three faculty co-directors for A&S Wired, a new residential college at UK. A&S Wired starts in the Fall of 2011, and aims to integrate social and intellectual lives of first-year students. She is excited about being involved – and thinks the students will be too. Cynthia Ruder is a professor in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, Literatures, and Cultures. She teaches Russian language classes and has a particular research interest in the Moscow Canal. Built in the 1930s during Stalin’s regime, the canal has a rich history.

Susan Tomasky is a graduate from the University of Kentucky and is currently on the board of A.E.P. (American Electric Power) as the president of A.E.P. Transmission. During her time as a student at UK, Tomasky was involved in solving big problems that faced many universities and colleges in the 1970s. Surmounting the challenges at UK helped prepare her for problem-solving on a professional scale.

Jeffrey Burch is an aerospace engineer that started his career as a physicist. Burch graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1977 with a BS in Physics, and went on to earn higher degrees from the University of Chicago and Rutgers University. In this interview, he discusses the faculty that influenced him during his time at UK.
